GPSR Labelling Requirements for Amazon Sellers

Under the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), products sold to consumers in the EU must meet specific labelling requirements. For Amazon sellers, this means making sure the right information appears on your product, packaging, or an accompanying document before your listings go live on EU marketplaces.

This article covers what needs to appear, where it needs to go, and how to handle it practically as an Amazon seller.

What information must appear on the label?

GPSR requires the following information to be visible on or with your product:

  • The name and contact details of the manufacturer (or importer if the manufacturer is outside the EU)
  • The name and EU address of the EU Responsible Person
  • A product description or identification such as a model number, batch number, or serial number
  • Any safety warnings or instructions required for the product type

For most Amazon sellers shipping from outside the EU, the EU Responsible Person details are the most immediate requirement to address.

Where exactly does the information need to appear?

The labelling information can appear in any of the following locations:

  • On the product itself
  • On the packaging
  • On an insert card or leaflet included in the packaging
  • On a label physically attached to the product

For clothing and textiles, the information can appear on a sewn-in label. For very small products where space is limited, an accompanying document is acceptable.

The key requirement is that the information is legible, durable, and accessible to the consumer without needing to open sealed packaging entirely.

What about Amazon listing requirements?

In addition to physical labelling, Amazon requires sellers to enter EU Responsible Person details in Seller Central for products sold on EU marketplaces. This is separate from the physical label requirement and both must be completed.

Amazon may restrict or remove listings where this information is missing or invalid. Entering RP details in Seller Central does not replace the physical label requirement.

Can I use a sticker?

Yes. A sticker applied to the product or packaging is acceptable under GPSR as long as it is durable and not easily removed. This is a practical option for sellers with existing inventory who need to add RP details without reprinting packaging.

For new production runs, updating your packaging files or label artwork is the cleaner long-term solution.

What languages are required?

GPSR does not specify a required language for labelling across the board. However, individual EU member states may have their own language requirements for certain product categories. For products sold across multiple EU marketplaces, including the required information in English plus the local language of your main target market is a reasonable baseline.

For safety warnings specifically, the language requirements of the destination country apply.

Practical steps for Amazon sellers

Start by identifying which of your products are sold on EU marketplaces and fall under GPSR. For each product, check whether your current label or packaging already includes manufacturer details and any required warnings.

Once you have an EU Responsible Person, add their name and EU address to your label, packaging, or insert card. Update your Seller Central listings to reflect the RP details. For existing FBA inventory, consider whether a sticker solution is practical or whether you will update on the next production run.

Keep copies of your label artwork and any documentation on file. If an authority requests evidence of compliance, having your labelling history documented makes the process straightforward.
